In collaboration with British Journal of Photography<\/em>, the Bodleian Libraries<\/a> at the University of Oxford is commissioning three photographic artists to create portraits which will enter the Bodleian Libraries\u2019 permanent collection.<\/span><\/h3>\n[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_empty_space][vc_empty_space][vc_empty_space][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_section css=”.vc_custom_1743074913041{background-color: #0a0a0a !important;}”][vc_row full_width_row=”true”][vc_column width=”1\/6″][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”2\/3″][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]\n

The selected photographers<\/span><\/h2>\n[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”22px”][vc_column_text]\n

This year\u2019s commissioned artists –\u00a0<\/span>Francis Augusto<\/a><\/span><\/strong>,<\/span>\u00a0Alys Tomlinson<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>and<\/span>\u00a0Leia Morrison<\/span><\/strong><\/a>\u00a0– each bring a distinct yet deeply human approach to portraiture. Augusto, based in London, creates candid, observational portraits that centre community, identity and underrepresented groups, drawing on a background in education and the arts.<\/span><\/span><\/h4>\n

With production underway, all three photographers are shooting their commissions. Sitters for this commission come from a wide range of departments at Oxford University and have been nominated by their peers and departments for their work transforming lives and global society. The portraits, to be published this autumn, will join the Bodleian Libraries\u2019 permanent collection, building a dynamic and diverse record of the university today.<\/span><\/h4>\n[\/vc_column_text]

Bodleian Libraries Commission<\/h2>\n[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]The Bodleian Libraries Commission is an ambitious collaboration between the Bodleian Libraries<\/a> and <\/span>British Journal of Photography<\/span><\/i>. It seeks to diversify the Bodleian Libraries\u2019 portrait collection by commissioning new portraits that reflect the breadth and real-world impact of Oxford University<\/a> research. This initiative will broaden the collection and ensure it is representative of the contemporary university, research community and the impact they have today.<\/span><\/p>\n

The selected photographers will receive a cash grant of \u00a35,000, plus printing, framing (provided by the Bodleian Libraries) and artwork transportation costs.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]\n

Theme – Catalysts<\/em><\/h2>\n[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]The theme of <\/span>Catalysts<\/span><\/i> focuses on pivotal forces that drive significant, long-term global impact and relevance. Photographers will be invited to visually interpret the moments, discoveries, or actions that initiate significant change and advancement. The selected works will collectively underscore the profound influence of these \u2018catalysts\u2019, showcasing how they shape our world and contribute to meaningful research and progress. <\/div>[vc_column_text]Step 1: Show us your work<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

To apply for this commission, submit 10 images from your archive that give a good overview of your practice and photographic style.<\/span><\/p>\n

Please note: These images are intended for us to get to know your photographic style and do not need to relate to the commission theme.<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/p>\n

Step 2: Proposal Submission<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

If shortlisted, we\u2019ll reach out to ask for a 100-word proposal detailing how you would respond photographically to the commission.<\/span><\/p>\n

Step 3: Proposal development and selection<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Submissions will be reviewed by a jury from British Journal of Photography and the Bodleian Libraries, with the shortlisted photographers progressing through to a proposal development stage.<\/span><\/p>\n

Step 4 – Final selection<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

The three selected photographers will be given five sitters or small groups (up to five per image) for five portraits which will be chosen via a selection process carried out by the Bodleian. The shoot period is dependent on the sitters\u2019 availability but will take place during the months of June – August 2025.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
